D-Star

Anyone here have any experience using D-Star equipment on their boat ?

I know very little about it at this point and I was curious how you were using it if you are using it. Functionally, from what I can figure out, it looks kind of like a long range point-to-point wi-fi connection that can reach boat to boat if both of you have D-Star equipment onboard, but that's about all I know.

If it is anything like it appears to be it seems like the perfect solution for setting up a network between boats and shore stations where wi-fi really just doesn't cut it because the range is so limited. The bandwidth isn't nearly as high but it looks like you can reach out across miles of empty ocean.

If you know anything about using D-Star first hand please speak up!

Total news to me, but if you can "skip" a WiFi signal from boat to boat in a VPN, it would mean internet access waaaaayyy out in the anchorage, instead of just the first 200 metres.
