Reefing a Hood 915 LD

I keep breaking parts on my somewhat ancient Hood roller furler. It seems to happen after reefing, while closely hauled. The latest failure is the donut (reference #18 on the attached drawing). The cost isn't going to kill me, but the failures under sail are unnerving. Am I doing something wrong?

Hello,

I don't think the LD furlers are designed for reefing. My understanding is the LD series is for furling only. My boat came with a 915 LD that had been converted to an SL (single line) system. According to the Pompanette web site, you can still get parts to convert from LD to SL.

If BarryL is correct, and the 915LD is designed for furling only, that would explain why you keep breaking it when you reef the sail.

You might want to contact Hood and make sure whether it is a furler or a furler/reefer.
