Cleaning up unifinished fiberglass

My boat has a hanging locker against the port hull. The problem is the fiberglass has no gelcoat and is pretty dirty and rough. I've thought about paint, but I'm not sure what kind to use. Any thoughts on the some methods to put a nice clean smooth finish on ?

Glue some "Naugahyde" to it.

Clean up the fiberglass as much as possible then fair it with thickened epoxy. And then use Interprotect 2000E to paint it. This will leave the fiberglass well sealed against water, which is probably important since it is a hanging locker.

Sailingdog can you give a little more detail on the epoxy step? I'm not clear on what "fair it" means. Thanks

Basically, you'll be skim coating the area with a thin layer of thickened epoxy so that you get a nice smooth surface. If you've ever done plaster work or concrete work, you'll know what I mean by skim-coating.

can also add some micro balloons to the epoxy, kinda gives you a bit more thickness to work with, and it sands out nicely

You can use most of the fillers—micro balloons, chopped fiberglass, micro fiber. I would avoid the Colloidial silica or Cabo-sil, since that will be the hardest to sand fair—it is very hard.
