Spraying gelcoat

Does anyone have experience spraying gelcoat for a repair job? I would like to use a small spray gun or airbrush attached to a compressor. Any suggestios as to what will work to spray a pattern of about 1.5"-2" wide. I do not want to use the desposible Prevail type spray units. Thanks for your help.

Spraying gelcoat

replusted,
You need quite abit of air press. and volume to spray gel. You can thin it down with styreen. But only a little. Also, gel will not fully kick off (top layer) unless you do one of two things. Either use a sanding agent in the mix, which I would not recomend,it contains wax, and if you ever try to paint over it you will have fisheye problems .

The best way is right after you spray, either spray some PVA(polyvinyl alcolhol) or something that works for me, spray paint from a can, of course if you want a shine and smooth finish, you will have to sand and polish the gel. Very long and hard work.

Hope this helps,

Dave R.
