Hi Its been three months since i purchased my sail boat nice little cruiser westerly warwick, thae usualy come with a diesel inboard mine didnt Having some mechanical knowlege didnt seem a major task. The big question is what do i put in. Have not seen much second hand but want to go around 15_20 hp if pos has tobe diesel and not to expensive. I have been offerd kubota engines from mower/tractors and can fabricate a heatexchanger my only concern is the gearing can anyone help

you didn't say what size/ make boat. that would help . possibly you could find transmissions that fix. "hurth" is the most common I beleive. you should be able tobuy the heat ex and water manifold shaft log, shaft, prop, engine mounts etc. still sounds expensive.

15-20 HP should be plenty for a boat that size.

The boat weighs 1800 pounds, 5-10 hp should be plenty.

There is a snag with a non-marinised engine, it won't like salt air in hot humid engine compartments. You mention the heat exchanger, you will need an exhaust cooling element too. Better to start with a marinised engine in my view. Or an outboard on 21 ft
