Im not really sure,but it dont look good. We were idling out of the river channel in to the bay,when the engine suddenly reved
really high,followed by lots of black smoke.the oil pan smells like diesel.

Sounds like you had a "Run Away" diesel and it destroyed itself. Bummer.
Getting an old used one may be cheap, but may also prove to be just another headache. I see no inexpensive way out of this one for you. Use your Google and see what shakes out I guess.
