10 HP should be plenty for your boat. The single cylinder engines tend to run a bit rough...since they're thumpers... The more cylinders the smoother an engine generally runs...

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Generally, sailboats shouldn't depend on their auxiliary engines in an emergency... the engines are far more likely to fail than a properly used rig is...

Hull speed on a 21' sailboat is about 6 knots, probably a bit less since the waterline is shorter than 21'. A 10 HP engine, properly propped, would get you close to hull speed, if not up to hull speed... so if the tidal currents are 7 knots... you'll be wanting to plan your trips accordingly.

I was going to say...a 21 footer fighting seven knots of tidal current WILL lose, irrespective of the engine.

Owning a sailboat is generally more about cooperation with natural forces, not trying to overcome them.

I have a friend who has a hardy diesel tractor. I don't think he put a dime into it in 15 years outside of oil and filters. Yes it is ugly and most likely heavy as hell but I bet it runs and runs.
