Sandblasting alternative?

I have my cast iron keel all stripped down to the bare metal. But, of course it is rust covered. Has anyone had any experience removing the rust other than with sandblasting? I''m preparing to fair and paint the keel and need to properly prep the bare metal for epoxy primer.

If you are down to metal and rust, I would try Ospho which is a phospohic acid based product that I used to use to restore cars. Wear protective glasses, gloves and clothes and use a wire brush but if the rust isn''t too bad you will end up with a clean (bluish black) surface.

If you want to stay from chemicals, why not try a random orbital sander and a 60 grit pad?

Bingo!
Ospho is made by Skyco and is the best metal prep for surface rust(not rot) going.I''ve been using this product for twenty years and swear by it.

See if there''s anyone around with a soda blaster (bicarbonate of soda). Without going into detail, it''s the only way to go on any surface.

Blasting IS the best way to remove rust and scale but even after blasting, the surface should be prepped for primer with ospho after the scale has been removed.
By-the-way, sanding wont get into the nooks and crannys.

Thanks everyone for your help. I think I''m going to try some abrasive disks and then possibly if needed, the chemical method. I''ll let you know how it goes. Thanks!
