Yanmar 1GM10 and racor fuel filter.

Ive got a Yanmar 1GM10 and a Racor 500 series filter. Im trying to find out what micron filter i should use with the Yanmar. Ive got the choice between 2,10,and 30 micron. Ive got a 2 and a 10 micron filter already, so my choice is between them. The fuel going to the motor is going to be clean comeing from a clean tank.

I've a 2GM20F. Secondary Yanmar filter is 10um and Primary Racor is 30um. This is original setup from factory. I suppose any particles smaller than 10um will not hurt the engine. But if you uses fine filters like 2um, likelyhood of more frequent change (fouling) of filter. Just guessing.

I had a older 1GM10 for 6 years and never had a problem using 30 microns, if something should get by the fuel filter element should get it. Change both every year and you shouldn't have a problem in my experience.
The only problem I had with the engine was overheating caused by a restriction in water flow by the sender which signals the alarm if the gets overheated. Had to get the block off and cleaned up after checking or changing other parts. Something to keep in mind. Flush the engine often if your in salt water and raw water fed. Bleeding the engine is easy also keep that 17 mm handy and never bleed the low pressure side of the engine by turning over the engine use the fuel lift pump. Fun engine easy to work on if you have good acess. If you can't get at it you mechanic can't. Access panels. PEACE Good luck.

Yanmar gives the 30 micron the nod but I have used the 10 in apinch. Do not use the 2 micron.

So the 30micron is the way to go.

I've been using Racor 30 micron primary filters for over 20 years on my diesels. Anything that makes it past the 30 micron primary primary will get filtered out by the engines secondary filter which is usually 10 micron.

In over 20 years of doing it this way I have yet to have a fuel related issue with injectors or the engines fuel system. Actually, now that I think about it, I've never even replaced an injector or anything related to the fuel injection system other than an electric fuel pump..

The best thing you can do is have your tank cleaned every three or four years by a professional fuel polishing company or, of you're so inclined as I was at one point, remove the tank and clean it yourself..

Im going to junk the tank thats in it now. Its located in the bilge and can only be filled by taking the nozzle into the boat. On top of that its been setting for 3 years with fuel in it. For now im going to put a 6 gallon outboard tank in the cockpit locker. The future idea is a tank mounted under the cockpit sole behind the motor and hooked into the old filler plate on the cockpit seat.
