Remote alarms that send text messages

I saw an ad for the Boat Nanny, a little blue thing that looks like a modem that sends your cellphone a msg if your bilge pump goes off, fire starts, etc. It seems pricey at $1,300 but I can see how it could be useful since I am away from the boat for long periods.

Has anyone used one of these, or another system onboard that sends an alarm to your phone or the boatyard security office? Are there any insurance discounts for these gadgets?

I should mention that I saw this in the online boating magazine Classic Yacht. Its sail and power and run by a naval architect. Since its free I can recommend it highly! www.classicyachtmag.com

Lat's and Att's had an ad for 'em listed at 499 or 599 can't remember which. Shop around.

This technology is used extensively in industry... it would be interesting to know if the insurance companies give a credit.

I guess it all depends on your priorities... When my boat is in the water, I'm generally down often enough to check on it that it isn't much of a worry. The main problem with most of the boat monitoring systems is that they have a monthly recurring cost associated with them.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

No problem, funny that googling 'boat remote sensors' does bring up the Nanny, but not the one I in lat's and att's - advertising pays I guess.
