PFD for guests and crew.
I'm looking to buy some other PFD's for people who come aboard to just ride along mostly. However, I'd like them to be as comfortable as possible, or the PFD will not be worn. That being said, I can't fork out the dough for the guests to enjoy the inflatable type. I'm looking for the type they use on jet skies and such. Still move around in, and not too bulky.
Heck, I'd buy some used if they were in decent condition, considering I'm the only person in the family who sails. Looking for 3 right now. Thanks for any suggesetions.

WM sells them in bundles of 4, reasonable cost. Otherwise you are looking at 50 - 100 a pop minimum.
Sorry, you really do get what you pay for.

The inflatables are the only type that are really comfortable. I use Sospenders but there are others. Sometimes you can find them for a good price on Ebay.

This may not be the best time of year, but........
I get those fairly nice Jet-Ski, Fisher, Boater type PFD's when they go on sale at end of year. At least they do work and I can have a small variety to fit small children to adults , and a few cats and dogs.
It nice to have people want to go in the boat. The first thing they may tell their child; "He may not have a Life Vest that fit you"?
Oh, yes I do, and a fishing pole too!

On a hot summer day, even the waterskiing type ones, which are fairly comfortable otherwise, get too hot to wear. Also, the Type III, fishing/waterskiiing type vests, don't have the same floatation or the ability to turn a person face up if they're unconscious, which most of the more comfortable inflatables ones do.
A good compromise might be the waist pack inflatable PFDs... not as expensive as the standard inflatables, but a lot more comfortable on hot days than the foam ones.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

We purchased a pair of Sospender inflatable vests several years ago for our last boat - and wear them at all times. They were expensive, but I needed to find a PFD that would be comfortable - otherwise the various standard Type I & II vests we keep aboard would never be worn.
Included in the accessories inventory, when buying our current boat, were 6 belt-type Sospenders, inflatable PFDs, like the ones sailingdog mentioned . . . a great bonus, considering they cost between $70-$90 each.
Our guests, unanimously, always choose these PFDs over the bulky alternatives. A very good compromise if you don't want the expense of the "suspenders" type.

We are upgrading to inflatable pfd/harnesses, but to this point have been using the Mustang jackets (the bright orange/yellow ones). They are comfortable and we've never had a guest complain about using them. We also have a few of the WM vests that are very similar (might even be made for them by Mustang?), they are bright yellow/orange on the outside and navy blue inside. They go on sale once or twice a year, so watch the flyers this spring.
P.S. As an aside, always ask guests if they know how to swim. I've been surprised at the number of times adults have answered "no." In my opinion, non-swimmers should not be wearing an inflatable, but should have a closed-cell foam vest that is fail-safe.

it depends, are they relatives? do you like them?
I had some inflatables for our friends and some of those big ass orange maewests with the reflective tape sewn in for the fashion plate kids friends. Its hard to pick up boys in a 200.00 designer bikini when you have one of those maewests riding up. Mean? yea, funny, you bet.

As Paul said, itt really depends on the friends you are sailing with.
I like the beltpack inflatables (got mine for 50 a pop on sale).
They don't wreck havoc with tan lines while topless.
The big orange maewest types are great, when my son's girlfriend took her's off (after we anchored) her silly assed designer bikini top came off with it.
Choices, it's all about choices...
