SPOT Satellite messenger?

Anyone own one? I saw the unit advertised for $149.00 plus $99.99 per year for the service. It might be an inexpensive alternative to an EPIRB if it works. I like the idea that I can send an i'm OK message with position, when out of cell phone range. it also has a non-emergency help button, and a 911 call that shows gps location. I don't know if it would be as water resistant as an EPIRB.

Dunlookn has a little shameless behaviour in the past
I saw this product listed on this site. Tried to contact the national sales manager listed on thier website last week.

Left a message asking him to contact me as there was interest in the sailing community...have not heard from him.

labatt will become famous soon enough
Do a search on this site. It was JUST discussed here the passed few days. Also check out www.panbo.com. Don't consider it a replacement for an EPIRB. It won't contact the USCG or provide direction finding to you in a true emergency. Outside of that, it's an interesting technology and they have been directing it towards the marine industry.

An EPIRB is probably a better idea if you're going to be going bluewater. The Spot Satellite system has a lot of holes in its coverage maps, and doesn't guarantee message delivery. An EPIRB is less versatile, but probably more reliable. The Spot messenger is a great device for what it is intended to do... give you a relatively inexpensive way to let your friends and family know where you are and that you're okay. Don't rely on one in an emergency as your primary distress device.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Talked with the spot rep today.

Cost for coverage is 911 coverage is $ 99.00 a year. Tracking coverage is an additional $ 49.00.

He swears coverage is out to 1,000 miles off shor.

SPOT is waterproof.

Battery live (two AA) is a year. In 911 mode it is eight days.

For the $ 49.00 feature anyone with your password can go onto thier website and see where you ar located.

Seems to have some neat features at a really low price.

Available at EMS (Eastern Mountain Sports, Cabella's, REI, ect.)

WILL NOT WATER ACTIVATE. Must be manually activated.

I'm thinking it might be worthwhile for my family's peace of mind, when I'm not able to check in by cell phone. I spend some time in the mountains, out of cell phone range. I'm also planning a sailing trip down the Mississippi River, and around the coast to North Carolina this spring. There may be days I can send an I'm OK signal when not in cell phone range. It apparently can be used to send an emergency signal that includes your GPS coordinates to authorities and family. Your family can then confirm your plans with rescuers. Seems like it might be worthwhile in an emergency.
