Transmission issues

I''ve acquired a 30ft Islander with a Palmer P60 and am having some transmission problems. Since I''m a neophyte sailboat owner with limited experience with the boat I''m looking for any and all tips. The main problem is getting in gear (forward and reverse) - you have to pretty much force it in gear. Unfortunately, I don''t really have the funds at the moment to have someone diagnosis it. I''m looking for any source of info in regards to adjustments or other things I could try...Thanks!

You might want to start by disconnecting the linkage from the control arm on the gearbox so you can figure out where the binding is in the control linkage or the gearbox itself. (Mark the position before undoing the coupling!)
