Winch Maintenance - Help with Older Lewmar 40s

I have a '77 Pearson 30 with older Lewmar 40 2-speed winches (pre-Ocean, non-ST) whose inner workings are different from current version of this winch. I've removed the winches from the boat and have removed the drum, but cannot remove the main spindle. There are no keys visible and there is a large cog at the top of the spindle as shown in the attached pic.
I am simultaneously posting here as well as checking with Lewmar and Arco (Australian Winch Co) to see if anyone has a copy of the schematic for these older (pre-Ocean) Lewmars. Other have raised this in the past on these boards, but haven't found any resolution. Thanks in advance for any assistance anyone can provide.

sailingfool will become famous soon enough
Assuming these winches share some design with the newer Ocean, remove the bearings and you should expose two plastic wedges set into the base that lock the spindle in. Slide the wedges out and you should be good to go.

If there are no wedges in the base, then another way to secure the spindle would be a split ring at the bottom of the spindle - turn the winch over and pry the split ring off.

No plastic wedges, but the ratchet gear assembly is removed by using a drift punch to remove the gear spindle. After that, the circlip on the bottom of the main spindle can be accessed. Clearly, the Ocean winches have gotten easier to maintain.

Since I see questions about these winches reappearing on these boards and elsewhere, I'll post pics of each stage and then again when I have the drums re-chromed
