Bottom Paint-Ches. Bay

Hello All...

Sorry for *another* thread on Bottom Paint... But after searching I found some information but wanted to confirm.

Which Bottom Paint is right for me....?

Vitals:

Boat: Sabre 34
Bottom: Freshly applied (12 coats) Interprotect 2000
Where: Boat Will be in a slip (no lift) on Magothy River in Chesapeake Bay
Use: Weekend Cruiser in bay...Impressing women
Wants: Lower Maintenance is more important than speed. But I don't mind underwater scrub with a brush every few months or so. I am willing to sacrifice some "smoothness" for lower maintenance but I'd rather not have a 5 year bottom paint that looks like the surface of the moon.
Color desired: Dark Blue

Top Contenders:

My dad has used VC-17 for years and loves it. However, his boat is on a lift (also on Chesapeake Bay...)

My uncle uses VC Offshore. His boat is docked at his house (not on a lift) on the South Shore of L.I. - He races too.

Petit Trinidad SR (Recommended by the Yard, but I'm here in Oriental, NC and not on the Bay...)

So in summary:
Non-Racing, medium to low maintenance bottom paint for Chesapeake Bay on Freshly Applied Interprotect 2000 Epoxy Bottom.

Thanks to all for the great information...

Craig

I used Petit Trinidad on the Chesapeake last year with great results and plan on using it again next year in NJ for coastal sailing.

Ditto on the trinidad. I'm at the elizabeth and half the year and on the Rappahanock the other half. I love the stuff. The chesapeake bay beard is no joke.

Bottom Paint

When I posed this question re bottom paint for the Chesapeake, recently to Interlux, they suggested Micron Extra, rather than Micron 66. Micron 66 is formulated for salt water while the Extra will work better in brackish water.

Just a question, but shouldn't the fresh water in the river, help greatly in keeping the bottom clean ?

I keep my boat on Rock Creek off the Patapsco, just north of where you will be, Two years ago when I did an epoxy bottom barrier coat job here is what I did based on input from the Pettit Paint people: first coat of bottom paint was black Trinidad, which is a hard paint. IT also adheres well. Then two coats of blue Pettit Ultima SR, which is a "soft" ablative paint. This past spring I did a quick hall to power wash the bottom to check on how the paint was doing, and also to replace the zincs. The bottom looked great -- very little growth, not even much slime. This fall I had the boat hauled and will apply another coat of the blue Ultima SR this spring. I can just start to see the black coat coming through in a few places, so it's time.

Either the Interlux Micron or the Pettit Ultima does well in the brackish waters of the Chesapeake.

Interesting, Sailor Mitch and I are in the same marina, and I too used Petit Ultima, but with just OK results.

The one difference seems that when I did my barrier coat two years ago this May...I didn't use the Trinidad (hard paint) for the first coat, the first coat was black, but it was Ultima as well as the two additional blue coats?
