Converting Edson Round Pedestal Gauges to Tack Ticks

I've got an interesting one - I've got this setup now, and I want to change the top gauge to a tacktick analog wind direction (the DMI took a crap and it now needs a head and wiring):

If I remember properly, the 5" wind instrument on there now (top, if you can't see the photo well) leaves a hole beneath it on the pedestal. Is there any common sense approach to changing this out to a square one that you guys could think of?

Here is a snip of the instrument going in it's place:

If I'm not mistaken those are Yacht Speciaties pods not Edson and that pedestal is, from the looks of it, is not an Edson either..

1) Measure the width at the widest point of the pods face.

2) Measure diagonally across the face of a TacTic, corner to corner, and if it's not bigger than the width of the pods face you can make new blank faces for the pods out of Starboard or Lexan and mount he new instruments to that new face..

The tack tick has no wires and is flush on the back, right? So how about just putting a flat plate in front of the round mount. Then mount the new instrument to that.

You should be able to put a flat coverplate over the hole and then mount the mounting clip to it... and then you can still remove the displays from the pedestal when leaving the boat alone.

I like that idea.

Another idea I got from a fellow sailor was to remove the pod (and then there will be a hole left in the pedestal). Cover the hole with wood and add in some kind of trinket to make it look like it was built that way and then buy a ticktack mount that attaches to the round "oh ****" bar above the instruments.

I double checked; it is an Edson mount and pods, just from the late 70's. I emailed them about it and they didn't have much to say in the way of how to change over without spending a fortune.

What do you think of that idea about the removal and covering of the hole thing?

Given the nature of the Tack tick instrument i see no reason you can't just velcro it to the face of the old instrument dial. (g) Then you can remove it in port for safe keeping. (BF put me up to this)

I am going to dinner with my son, when I return, I'll deal with the likes of you.;)

Velcro isn't necessary. The TackTick instruments come with a quick release type mounting bracket that works quite well. They can also be permanently fixed in place as well. :)
