I agree that the voltage regulator sounds suspect. If it's not operating properly, this would cause the alternator warning light on the control panel to be illuminated. Since it's an external regulator, it should be fairly easy to swap it out for a replacement.
When you get a definitive answer, please post a follow-up so we can all learn something.
