Alternator warning light

My alternator warning light won't go out. I checked the usual suspects and found out that the alternator is in fact putting out power just fine. It's a Powerline 150 amp. I checked the terminal for the warning light on the external regulator and I find that it doesn't put out any voltage when the alternator is putting out power. Therefore, the light stays lit.

I'm inclined to think that something is wrong with the regulator. Before I act on that assumption, I thought I would see if anyone had any similar experience or advice.

What is the voltage on the alternator post?

I have not checked the voltage. I can see where the batteries are being charged from the alternator by observing my battery monitor. It reads between 20 - 50 amps which is typical. I assume the voltage would be 12.5, but I guess I better check it.

I agree that the voltage regulator sounds suspect. If it's not operating properly, this would cause the alternator warning light on the control panel to be illuminated. Since it's an external regulator, it should be fairly easy to swap it out for a replacement.

When you get a definitive answer, please post a follow-up so we can all learn something.

JR4...On the chance that both the alternator and regulator are Balmars...see the trouble shooting section of your Balmar paperwork as it details 4-5 easy steps to check on and isolate the problem. Pages 10-11 of this manual indicate the general procedure but may vary a bit by regulator. Others are available for download on the site.
