how come no one told me about this before?
i spent all last week getting the boat ready for spring sailing. the day i wanted to get the 135% back on, the wind was blowing about 15-18 kts. i jockeyed the boat around the slip to head her into the wind. as it was pretty cold, and a front was pushing in, i was wearing sweatpants, a hoodie and my mountain hardwear windbreaker. as i looked around for a way to attach my rigging knife, i realized i had no belt and all my "belty" pants were back in my car a good distance away. my fingers were cold, and i figured i'd save myself the anticipation of losing my new knife overboard, i thoght i might as well just toss it in the drink and be done w/ the inevitable.
as i sat there w/ my sailing gloves on, one fastened, the other open, i figured if i just looped the lanyard through my velcro closure and voila, knife close at hand.
so..how come no one told me about this before..did i sleep through that instruction block?

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Hmm, try swinging your arm around like you are grabbing for something, like a line or sail. Make sure to duck before the knife hits you in the head. Your Sabre is lookin' mighty fine by the way.

well, as all of this took place in my slip..not sure how much swinging i would do...i will however duck everytime i flail my arms wildly above my head.
the bigger picture is about losing your knife overboard, not sailing with it hanging from your wrist...
thanks for the compliment..i spent an entire week going through all my systems, and making sure everything is working.
before i put her away last december i spruced up the brightwork.
this go-round, i came up w/ a way to use my whisker pole as a asymmetrical spin sprit. i attach it to the mast base, and push it through one of the anchor chocks..voila, pole out 3 feet in front of the bow. now gybing the spinn will be a piece of cake.

I like your ingenuity, just don't want you to get bonked. I use one of those clips with a hoop on either end. Attach one end to your jacket and the other to the knife. If you buy several clips, you can put them on anything, a belt loop or a zipper, in case the weather changes. That way they won't swing around. And they are right there in case you need it in a hurry.

Dude, I'm jealous. I'm still on the hard, down Bay on the Yeocomico R. At least I bought the bottom paint on Wednesday.
The boat's lookin' good; love those Sabres.
PS. I'm not so sure that I'd like that knife swinging around ready to hit me in the face. I keep one looped over the light at the Nav table

Don't have a pic of it handy, but a trick I learned while spearfishing in my teens, is to use a knife sheath strapped to my calf. Since I wear bathing suits often while onboard, with no belt, I wear my leatherman sheath on my calf with a pair of dive-knife straps.
