Alternator woes

Okay, so here’s the deal, I just finished the install of my ‘new to me’ rebuilt Yanmar 3GMF and am only moments from going putt-putt, but before I do I have to figure out this alternator/wire thing. There is a t-type plug (R & L) - my wiring harness has both wires (blue/black & red/black) – do I hook them both up or just the “L” one. The book shows both but is vague as to when. I’m confused. It would really help if you said what alternator you have... Lots of different alternators out there...some are voltage regulated, some aren't.
