volvo engine

just bought a sailboat with a 28 hp volvo model 2003 engine.
i would appreciate any advise on particular problem anyone has experienced with this engine as well as help on where to most economically obtain replacement parts for same.

That will get you the parts listing. Use the dealer locator to find someone near you, you can order the parts through them. If there''s a cheaper way, I''d like to know as well (I''ve never seen a ''discount'' volvo parts dealer).

I HIGHLY suggest you don''t assume ANYTHING about your engine. Replace all the impellers and filters (or have someone do it for you) change your oil and coolant. If you''re not in the water, replace your shaft seal and cutlass bearing now as well. If you''re in the water, plan to do it on your next haulout. That way you''ll be starting maintenance on your schedule instead of it being a question mark.

An unfortunate problem with the 2003 is that the MS2B transmission has a splined input shaft that tends to wear. If you use reverse a lot to slow the boat going into slips, one day the transmisison will not shift into reverse. Volvo makes a new mounting kit that can be installed but the transmisison must be removed. If the splines are worn, as they usually are, the transmission must be rebuilt with a new gear set.
