Pub911 is on a distinguished road
Simrad AP16 compared to AP24

Can anyone explain the differences in these two Simrad Autopilot lines?

For what it's worth, this post is related to one initiated by me called "Simrad vs. Ray Marine under-deck autopilots?".

Pub..aside from minor cosmetic differences, the key feature differences in the AP24 seem to be:
• Complete set of Turn Patterns – including Depth Contour Tracking, programmable S-turn, Zig-Zag, Continuous turn, Square patterns and many more.
• Improved steering algorithms – full Rate Of Turn (ROT) control provides smooth and precise turns in any condition and improves tack and gybe performance on sailboats.
• No Drift Course – Maintain set Course Over Ground even in severe wind and current conditions.

I highlighted thefeatures that might be of interest to a cruiser but the Maintain Course over ground is quite interesting I think. Usually one would point the boat at the waypoint heading and then press "steer" and you would then ned to adjust over time for current and tide and wind etc. as your steered course (magnetic) will become different than the best course to the waypoint. "Maintain Course Over Ground" will simply maintain you on your course to the waypoint or Plotted course without having to input anything. Just steer to the heading and press the button.Convenient!
