Interesing condensation problem - galley sink

Our 1984 Hunter 31's shelving underneath the galley sink is warped. I started taking a closer look and couldn't find a leak. Upon further review by the replay officials, I find the sink next to the non-insulated reefer. This is causing the stainless steel to cool at a different rate than the air. Condensation drips onto the shelving...and so it goes. I was surprised by the amount produced, but if one thinks about it, the sink has a fair amount of surface area and is shaped like a big bowl, funneling it all to the bottom.

Any tips on a fix? The boat is kept at a marina on an inland lake in central Texas. Shore power is readily available if the solution involves power.

Insulating the refrigerator would be a good idea.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

This is one case where you can use the insulation foam sold at Home Depot etc.... pop the sink out - and add a 1/2 " - 1" of foam insulation to the sink underside...however - it is probably not just condensation from the sink but the cabinet in general as well... in which case - insulate the reefer, or add a cutout in the door under the sink or one of the cabinet sides for ventilation....

Sell the boat. Find another without this problem. Look for ones that don't start with h.

4 posts and already to Hunter bashing! wow!

Surely you jest! No "h" boats?! We'd leave out Halberg-Rassey and Hans Christian to name a few.

First boat - sorry - no apologies for going with the 'h' boat!

---

Now - back to the problem. Insulation - are you talking about the sheets or the rolls with foil backing?

Well for the reefer the foil backing would work better - for the sink I am talking spraying it that expandable insulation foam you get in a can....(may work in the reefer as well - when I custom did my reefer / cooler on my cat that was what I used to insulate...it all depends on how easily you can get to things there....

First boats are forgiven! I used the lower case "h" on purpose. Halberg-Rassey and Hans would have required a Capitalized "H" of course!

The more insulation you can put around the refrig the better. You are basically colling the entire cabinet area. This combined with the warm air in the other side of the sink is making the condensation. You need to keep the cold in the frig and out of the caninet. BTW- Halberg Rassey, doesn't have that problem!

Speaking of condensing. I hope I can do this on this thread. I just visited my boat (34' Irwin Citation) on its' cradle and, as it is warming up, there is an amazing amount of condensation forming on the cabin ceiling. I mean dripping. The boat is not shrink wrapped; just covered with a light tarp and vents are open. I've never noticed this with previous boats and wondered if this is a normal Spring thing. Bilges have some water as usual with some anti-freeze added.
