double braid eye splice

For some time now I have been trying to put an eye splice in 1/4" double braid. I for the life of me can't do it! I tried the New England Ropes method and the fid jams up in the aria where the core goes thru the cover (in at "C" and out at "D"), I need to know the right fid diameter and if possable another method of doing it. I bought 100' and now down to 88', I need to have 78' for my topping lift I'm putting in the mast then to the cockpit. I'm really frustrated now and trying very hard at not to make mention of words that will definately get me expelled from SailNet.

Just curious, how did you manage to use up 12' doing an eyesplice??

Get a Brion Toss Splicing Wand... it'll make your life a lot simpler.

Specifics of which line you're trying to splice also will help. Sta-Set, Warpspeed..or what?

As Dawg suggest, I have a splicing wand and find that it does make it easier -- most of the time.

My advice - attach the topping lift to the boom with a bowline, whip the tail end to the standing part for neatness, and nobody will ever recognize that you saved yourself a lot of time and aggravation (except you...).

I agree. I gave up double braided splicing. Even the pros can mess it up. I had to cut one off because the main wouldn't go all the way up, the splice got stuck in the sheave. Anyhow, I feel the same way about golf, like my Uncle once said, "If I want to ruin a good day by getting frustrated, I'll stay home with the kids."

You're trying to put an eye-splice in 6mm double-braid?? I was told by my rope suppliers that the minimum size they'd do one was in 1/2" for all the reasons you're having problems!

All the "eye-splices" on my boat (mostly 6mm line) are made by simply bending the end around a thimble back onto itself and stitch whipping it for at least a half inch.. I sounds dodgy, but it takes 5 minutes to do and I have never had one fail.

check out youtube, do a serch for splicing. They show some good tecnique. I still cant do it

I have spliced lots of 1/4" it is doable but much easier to learn on 3/8 or 1/2 I use a marlow needle not a fid
