Rutland 913 wind generator

Anyone have experiences with this unit? I'm toying with adding one. A friend has one he's selling, and it fits a mounting option I have fairly easily.

Supposedly will start output at 5 knots of breeze and is very quiet, but I can't find anything non-marketing other than a review in a 5 year old article in a British rag that doesn't seem to have been particularly rigourous.

The simplest response I can give you is "Had one before, when I buy again it'll be the same one"

Daniel...I would suggest you not spend your money on this model OR any small blade wind generator. Read the Practical sailor reviews from summer 2007.
Only the large blade units give you meaningful output inn 10 knots of less.
This graph is from 4 winds so throw their unit as biased...but look at the Rutland in relation to others.

On the good side...it is quiet!
EDIT...here is a Practical Sailor test of several including the Rutland:

Cam, that article actually doesn't make the unit sound all that bad for me. One of the reasons I'm thinking about it is because I have a friend who's selling one cheap (a few hundie), and it will just snap right on to the, um, well, uh, SolarStik (duck!!!). Getting 20 to 40 amps a day out of the thing in an anchorage is not that bad. The quiet aspect is very important to us too. I'm still mulling it over, but thanks for your thoughts and the reference to the article; that was exactly the kind of thing I was looking for, and I just couldn't seem to find it on my own.

Well...given the fact that the Solar Stik will need a LOT OF HELP...I approve of your decision! On the other...I have lost all respect for you!

Hey, we'll all know a lot more this summer, as I'm taking the thing to Bermuda, deployed! I expect to be in a position to let everyone know both how it performs and how it holds up. Not to hijack my own thread, but I'm expecting to get 45 to 50+ amps a day out of the thing (between the articulation and the MPPT controller). If I don't, then I view the concept as not being worth it, at least from a performance standpoint. Considering that I could expect 30 to 35 amps from 100 watts of fixed panels, I don't think my expectation is unreasaonble, even if unrealistic.

But as I said, with the Rutland, I'm thinking I might be able to cajole 80 to 100 amps out of the entire setup per day, which means I expect to burn about 120 amps net per day during the trip to Bermuda (trying to be conservative), which means I would need to burn fossil fuel to charge just once or twice, depending on how fast we are. I've never sailed this particular boat to Bermuda, or for 5 or 6 days straight without stopping, so I'm guesstimating a little bit.

Now, my wife's view, because she's smarter than me, is that we should not add the windgen, because we're likely to buy another boat at some point (we've been toying with a cat for a few reasons; nothing imminent though), so she says it's not worth adding upgrades to Miracle. I guess that's a factor of how much I can get the Rutland for, but that's where we are.

Just fooling with you Dan as I think you know. Actually your expectations are resonable for the panels in settled weather and with no swinging at anchor and someone aboard all day to make some adjustments...you may get in the 60-70 amphour range on good days. My objections have always been about the exaggerated claims and the price...not the robustness or whether the concept has merit. If you can pick up the Rutland for a song, you may find yourself making some good juice on the passage and being energy neutral on a sunny, breezy day. Will look forward to your report after the trip....but I would not overlook the "SAFE" aspects of your energy decisions. (Spouse Approval Factor Estimate). Always be safe out there!!

Oh I'm not remotely offended, and I took your comments exactly as they were intended (I think!).

I love the SAFE approach, not just to energy, but everything. We live by an expression in my household: If mommy's not happy, nobody's happy.

I suspect truer words never have been spoken in most households!

Looks like we splash this week, and our mooring goes in on April 9, so we are just days away from getting out there sailing. I can't wait. I'm just busting to get going this season, moreso than most years.
