CnC30 is on a distinguished road
Instrument Placement

Hi,

I'm new to posting threads and very new to sailing. I purchased a 30' C&C in January. I've never sailed, but have had a power boat. I purchased a C70 Raymarine chart plotter/radar/depth sounder. I will be able to install in app 1 month. However, I have ben advised that the traveller is too close to the pedestal and a pedestal guard will block the mainsheet. What are my options?

Thanks

Cheers!

I have seen them on swing out arms from the companion way.

CNC30-

I'd recommend you read this POST. It will help you get the most out of your time on sailnet.

I'd also recommend trying to set it up on a swing arm in the companionway, since that will allow you to use the chartplotter in the nav station as well as the cockpit much of the time. That is how the one on my boat is setup, and it works very well.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

On a C&C 30, if you can't see from the wheel to a swing arm in the companionway, you're too blind to sail! (Although I'm sure some PC type will now mention blind sailors...)

This is not only the easiest fix, it keeps your gear out of the weather (you can get a "hatch dodger" if you want) and you can lash it back when not in use otherwise.

I put a GPS on an architect's gooseneck arm and a depthfinder on a hinged thingie to get the same results on a tiller-steered Viking 33. I looked down slightly to read the GPS, and down to the edge of the nav station to read depth (it was set to "big numerals only").

I really do believe that having the videogame display right at the helm can be as deleterious to one's seamanship as yakking on a cellphone while driving so manifestly can be.

sailingdog - I'm new here also, just wondering if you were inferring cnc could have somehow posted better.

CnC30 - I had a C&C 30 decades ago. Brick solid hull and sails very stiff. Won many a race.

Nah, just a lot of information about posting a good question, photos, links, etc in that thread that most n00bs don't know.

A lot of times, n00bs ask questions but don't give enough information or the wrong information to get a really good answer. Not saying that is the case here, but reading that post is something I think most n00bs would find useful.

FWIW I owned for a number of years a much loved '77 C&C 30 and one of the first things I did was to install an Edson pedestal guard, fit fine. If you have in mind one of the guards with an angled top, that may well interfer with the mainsheet. The C70 looks quite narrow, it might fit inside a standard, non-angled guard, or get one sized 3-4 inches higher.

I'd get a guard one way or another, you woundn't want a gype in a big breeze to rip the compass off... You should take this subject to the C&C email list, I'd bet a current owner has been there/done that.

PS you bougth a very sweet boat, I'd buy another in a sec, my absolutely favorite boat.

Welcome CnC30! I have my plotter mounted on a swing out arm mounted midway up the pedestal base itself rther than on the pedestal guard rails. Perhaps that would work for you as well.

On my CS-36..

On my CS-36 the main sheet is right in front of the pedestal. I did not want to move to mid boom sheeting because I like the performance of end boom sheeting and a cockpit mounted traveler. In order to mount instruments at my helm I made a new pedestal guard out of 3/4 inch thick Starboard and then mounted two swiveling NavPods port and starboard. This instrument table replaced the existing pedestal guard top plate and works flawlessly...
