Update on SIYB hull cleaning issue
Just received this note from Dave Merk of the Port of San Diego:
The has not taken a position on in-water hull cleaning and, at this time, has no intention of doing so. The document being circulated was drawn up by a staff person from the Port and a boatyard representative as a list of potential options for reducing copper loading in Shelter Island Yacht Basin (SIYB). It was a discussion document and never intended to be regarded as anything beyond that. That being said, Port of San Diego and the SIYB tenants are responsible for taking steps to reduce copper loading into the basin. As you know, every other marina basin in San Diego Bay also has been identified as being impaired based on copper concentrations and also will be the subject of TMDL’s similar to that in SIYB. To address these issues, the Port is pursuing an EPA-funded study to identify alternatives to copper-based paints. We also will consider any other option for reducing copper loading into the Basin.
