Bile Pump Connections

What type of waterproof wire connections should I use for installing a New Bilge pump? I have always just twisted the wires and then wraped with shrink wrap. Is that OK? or should I use something else?

You really need to crimp the connections using a proper crimper and adhesive-lined heat shrink tubing.

This is a proper crimper for insulated connectors:



This is a proper crimper for heat-shrink connectors:



Either use double crimp connectors and put adhesive-lined heatshrink over them, or use the single crimp heatshrink connectors instead.

and then make sure that you get the wires as high as you can in the bilge.

And make sure you're using marine grade tinned stranded wire...

I soldered mine then used adhesive-lined heat shrink tubing. Is that ok?

Yes that is quite acceptable as well....

While it should work, it isn't recognized as a suitable way to do that type of connection by the ABYC...

Soldering is OK for the connections, (if not for the ABYC) but IF precautions aren't taken, the lead content in solder and the zinc chloride flux, are potentially hazardous to your health . . . but that's a subject for another topic.

I find that a nice windy day makes a great bile pump for some people! No wires needed.
