Storm Jibs

Is there a formula for selecting an appropriate sized storm jib for a sailboat? I have seen them advertised at fairly reasonable prices on the web, but I don''t know whether they are the correct size for my Cape Dory 26. How does one select a storm jib? I know that companies will make one for me if I tell them what sort of boat I have, but these are very expensive. Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks and fair winds,
