My Volvo Penta MD47B is dead, 45 years old

Sunday, the 6th of April my faithfull machine died after 45 years of service. After the initial shock I have come to the conclusion that I was lucky that the machine died while I was peacefully moored. I could as well have happened while entering a harbour.

So, basically I am relieved that my trip to the Carribians later this summer will happen with a new machine.

I only need to remove the roof and the floor of the steeringhouse in order to to take the old machine out and put a new machine in. I have already fallen in love with a Perkins 130C that seems to fit nicely with the gearhouse, propeller and shaft that is there. The new machine is only 20mm longer than the old one.

I will have to admit that is has cost me quite a number of internal battles to muster the courage to remove the roof and the floor of the steeringhouse.

My condolences - do have a cause of the death yet (Old age I guess - 45 years is a long time)?

I believe that 45 years is quite close to immortality when engines are concerned. The same goes for me: Almost immortal is good enough.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

It does indeed, and I can use the old gearbox, shaft and propeller. The new engine is only 20 mm longer than the old one

Bueno... ... I hope you're getting the new engine at a good price.

So do I. I am just waiting for the wind to slow down a bit before I will take the dinghy and row to the store and ask for the price, for the machine and for the installing. The store is only 300 meters away.
