The heat of the sun...

This may seem like a silly thread but the sun was really brutal outside this weekend. I am looking for any and all advice about protection from the sun. I am hoping to focus this thread mostly on clothing, apparel, etc as opposed to things you can do to your boat.

Sunsceen, hat, sunglasses are must

I wonder if there is a long sleeve shirt that's so light you don't feel it but it keeps you from burning.

I wear long sleeves all the time. Regular thin cotton long sleeve "Ts" or whatever they are. No worse than wearing a Tshirt and I actualy stay cooler since my arms don't get so much heat from the sun.

Try sundayafternoons dot com for sun protective clothing, hats, shirts (long sleeved, polo etc.)
They have a nice line of clothing designed to protect from ultraviolet rays.

It seems WalMart carries some inexpensive but effective polypropylene T's, both long- and short-sleeved. Just found out about this today, while crewing a race.

The nice thing about polypropylene is that, unlike cotton, it'll wick mositure away from you. It helps keep you cool in summer and warm in winter.

Today, I was wearing bathing suit, white cotton short-sleeved tee, ball cap and boating sandals, and was comfortable. But the water is yet a bit cool and we had approx. 20 kt. winds.

Columbia clothing makes some really good stuff..spf 40 ..I think !
I lived in the south west and outdoors all the time climbing ,hiking ,or backpacking stuff held up fairly well for the abuse it took.

Shirts with collars ..you could be out in the middle of nowhere looking like you were waiting for the bus !

I just can't stand out there without a good, polarized, pair of sunglass. Skin protection for us is default, but for me and my youngest son, it's mandatory a good eye protectiion.

I wear a long sleeve shirt, hat, sunglasses, shorts and deck shoes but my female crew insist on just a hat, sunglasses and deck shoes. Go figure.

merlin, my favorite long sleeve is by Columbia Sportswear Co. of Portland. White, light weight and vented all the way across the back with fine webbing on the inside that covers the vent. I don't recall, but it does have a SPF rating that was pretty high. My only gripe is the darn thing is made in Sri Lanka.

Hat, always my hat. Again made by Columbia. BIG ole bill with retractable flaps and vented with webbing as well. If you don't mind the 'Elmer Fudd' look, it's a great hat. Again, made in Vietnam....geez! Oh yeah, it also has a strap for my pin head.

Last but not least, two pair of wrap a round sunglasses. Mine are prescription and I like for all my glasses to be polarized. And since I dropped a pair off a very deep dock in Tampa, I always use a lanyard on all pairs. BTW, I did retrieve them with a borrowed set of fins, but it cost me my hearing for three days! I think to top it all off, I'm going to invest in some of those 'Bozo' shoes for on deck stability and floatation, just in case!

Well, with this get-up (sans Bozo shoes) I made a 1200 mile passage without being burned to a crisp, and that was without the zinc grease or sun block, so the outfit works. Then, I go to the pool with the wife for an hour and a half last Friday and I'm just now able to breath without my hair screaming. Yeah, I'm working on a solar panel!
