I recently bought a new Vetus hydraulic pump on ebay from justin_ccs. It cost me 175 plus a very reasonable 26 in shipping from Florida to Fredonia,NY. Far less overall than buying one anywhere else.
I've bitten the bullet and realized that since Vetus won't supply spare parts, I'll have to replace all the components of my hydraulic steering setup rather than repair them, which to me is not nearly as satisfying.
I met and talked to Justin, a likable fellow from South Africa, who is temporarily stranded while he repairs his ocean going cat. Meanwhile he is able, though contacts in Europe, to buy overstocked Vetus equipment. Like my pump it is all brand new but perhaps last years model, which for most sailboat stuff really doesn't matter. In fact the new pump is identical to my old one, with the exception of the shaft diameter, a 3/4" taper instead of a 1" taper. Works for me as I want to change the wheel anyway to one with a smaller overall diameter. All the newer wheels come with a 3/4" tapered hub.
He is also able to get other equipment as well, so if anyone is looking for a source of marine hardware, he's worth a look.
