Fuel tank gauge/float

The fuel gauge on my boat won't read above 1/4 full. It was working OK last season, but now when I turn the key it won't rise above that level no matter how much gas is in the tank. I'm not even sure it would read less than that level, either. A friend told me that if the gas was "varnished" at all it would coat the sensor so that it wouldn't send properly.

Is this problem more likely the gauge or the float sensor? If it is the sensor, are those things generic for gas tanks or do you have to get one that specifically fits the tank? Obviously the gauge would be no problem to replace.

Thanks!

It depends on the type of sender. If it uses a float...the float may have developed a leak and may not be "floating" as it should be.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Sd's point is valid...most old float's were hollow either mettle or plastic...most new floats are a solid composite of sorts...they dont get pinholes and fill up any more...as to your question yes you can buy a generic sending unit and install in your existing hole...bolt patterns are/were pretty standard...just bring it in with you to the store ,you will find a match..

You will find them sold with long arms that will require you to measure the depth of your tank and cut/bend following the directions...

As far as you friend's notion of shellacking...??? All new types have enclosed potentiometers..this is not going to happen...

This is an hours job at most..
