Replacing a diesel tank
I need to replace my existing diesel fuel tank. It's steel, and seriously rusted inside and out. I'm especially concerned about debris getting dislodged in heavy seas, clogging the filter or fuel line and causing an engine stall at the worst possible time.
I have read the Nigel Calder's take on fuel tanks in his book "Boatowners Mechanical and Electrical manual". Per his recommendations, I'd like the following tank:
Material: Cross-linked polyethylene
Dimensions: about 36"L by 18" W by 12" H
Capacity: 20-30 gallons
Baffles: At least one
Inspection ports: In each baffled section
Fittings: Fuel, return line, fill. All on top of tank
Sump: A low spot to collect water, debris
The real problem is the sump. I have been unable to find a cross-linked polyethylene tank anywhere that has a sump. Any ideas on where to look? Will I need to have a custom tank made?
