I was going to hijack the other post about
GPS but decided to do my own. When I started getting my boat ready after 4 yr hiatus, the first thing I took off and threw away was the Loran. I figured it wouldn't be much good. I don't really cruise in strange waters, but remember being out in the fog or at night, trying to feel my way back in the channel.
With water levels down it might be a good idea to have something to tell me where I am. My budget is tight so the low cost
GPS' that I see are attractive. The only problem is I envision a great big screen with maps and all that good stuff. I really know nothing about
GPS, but don't think a big, full screen map is going to happen with a low cost unit. Will I be able to see anything useful with my old eyes? I've resigned myself it is necessary to wear my bifocals while sailing (didn't do that 4 yrs ago).
That said what model of the really low price jobs is going to give me the most readible display? Do I get some kind of map, showing the Lake MI coastline? Do I get waypoints or some digital female voice telling me "turn left here"? Am I better off with the latest, but cheapest unit or is an older unit with a bigger screen more likely to give me what I want?
