home made davits- Good Old Boat magazine

The latest issue of GOB had a nice article about making your own boat davits. I'm not much of a wood guy but it looked pretty simple. My dinghy is a nine-foot Tinker Tramp. probably weighs less than 50 LB

Any other opinions on the article or alternative davit ideas?

The author said the alternative was $1000, are there cheaper davit systems out there?

thanks

I bought a stainless davit last year and it was about $1000.00. Never seen any made of wood. What kind of wood did they recommend using?

Garhaurer makes davits of 1" and 1 1/2' SS. Their stock one in one inch, was $700 when I bought mine last year. Comes complete with everything except the dinghy.

My davit is from Garhauer and they do offer two different tube sizes bit it is not 1.5 inches. Do you realize how large that is ? The size difference is within the wall thickness of the tubing. Mine did cost just under $1000.00 I also added a second cross arm (tube) so I can mount solar panels.

Garhaurer pair 1" davits $775. If you're interested should see if they are going to be at a boat show near you. They would probably ship them to the show and save you the shipping costs. (not sure how big a deal that is.)

My error, 1 1/4" not 1 1/2". Blame it on old age

I have the 1 1/4 size davit. I just looked over my records and not only did they add a second cross arm connecting the right davit to the left davit for no charge but they did not charge me shipping. It was an easy install with the supplied hardware.

I bought the Forspar davits a few years ago for $699 at the Annapolis boat show, they're well made except the stainless they used has some spot rusting, probably 304 stainless. The new version has high-density plastic gussets instead of the stainless gussets that I have. They came with Harken blocks and seem to work well.
