Bottom paint texture....

I just finished putting on some bottom paint (Micron csc) and was wondering what kid of finish did any other DIY get? I find the texture is a little rough. Is this how anitfouling paints are or was it a "user error"?

Thanks
Todd H

What type of paint roller did you use?

I used the "foam" one... sails man said it would give a smooth finish. Might be the last time I trust that salesman

I put allot of Micron on over the years, two things come to mind. Stir, stir and stir some more. There has been times, that the bottom looks like it has pimples after I got done applying new paint. Not to worry it is ablative, it will polish itself smooth.

Using a foam roller should have given you a smoother finish than a traditional roller, but the prep is the key. Was it smooth before you rolled on? Nonetheless, mine have always been somewhat textured, especially after adding the cayenne pepper LOL

Micron

I also have used Micron on our last two boats within a span of 13 years. Our last was bottom-coated with Micron Extra using a medium nap, synthetic wool roller.

This photo is from last Spring showing the texture. There are 3 applications of Extra from prior seasons as a base coat, after stripping and barrier-coating. The bronze strut has a metal primer as a base.

Did you tip it with a foam brush after rolling?

I just put csc on Sunday as well. I didn't want to make a big mess sanding so just rolled it on as is. I didn't get a really smooth finish either but I was more than happy not to have the mess of sanding! I spot sanded some areas where it was flaking off, nasty stuff. I almost got sick from the fumes while rolling it on. I used a medium nap roller and it came out looking pretty good considering. It only looks rough where I had flakes coming off. Anyone have thoughts about the flaking spots I have. Is it time to sand or strip the bottom when this starts to happen?

How long has it been since you took it down to the barrier coat? Oh Joy is due for bottom paint and the current coat is so thin that the barrier coat is starting to show in spots. It looks brand new still but I'll probably sand it a bit and add a fresh coat prior to rolling on the ablative. Sometimes you just have to take ALL of the old bottom paint off.
