raccoon tails

I was wondering if someone might be able to give me the real name for what I think are raccoon tails hanging in the spreaders and shrouds. Also would like to know how they are made.

I think you're talking about baggywrinkles... they were originally made by using small stuff and binding it with small diameter line... and then wrapping the shrouds or stays with it... modern ones are made with polypropylene and nylon that is heat set to a central core, that is wound around the shrouds or stays.

Seafaring.com has them for sale IIRC.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.
