spreaders

I am wondering what the condition of spreaders should be. on my oday 23 they seem a bit flimsy where they are secured at the mast (when the mast is down). They don't seem to have any problem at all when the rigging is all set up and tight. just trying to see about preventative maintenance for these babies.

my friend's Coronado 25 is similar - the spreaders are mounted such that they move when the rig is down, but when the rig is secured they are tight.

see if you can find about more info about your oday below

What are your spreaders made of? They don't have to be all that strong...just strong in compression...so that they can hold the shrouds out from the mast, and prevent the mast from falling over.

My spreaders act the same way but what I am worried about is the compression on the mast. Some have said that there should be a bar inside the mast to keep it from being squished from the spreaders pushing in.
Is this true?

What is the usual way that spreaders attach to the mast?
I would think that mast designers would take this into account and build them to handle such loads.

What are better, rigid or loose spreaders?

Does anyone have pictures of their spreader setup?

Adam

The spreader base should be through bolted with a compression tube over the bolt, so that the compression forces on the bolt and caused by the spreaders being pressed in by the shrouds isn't going to damage the mast.

Here is all the info I have.

LOA-22'9"
LWL-19'6"
Beam-7'11"
Draft-2'3"/5'4"
Displacement-3085
Ballast-1200
I-28'
J-10'
P-23'6"
E-9'
Mast Height-32'

Probably more information than you asked for. I figured out the displacement/ratio the other night and came up with 197. anybody want to double check this?

I am also curious about sail area. Is this assuming a 100% Genoa? Is it the measurement from forestay to mast plus boom to mast using the IJPE numbers? I am guessing that you would figure it out with each sail.
sail area is posted 246 square ft.

Anyways...I feel much more confident about the spreaders based on your guys responses. thank you.

I guess that the numbers I got were from 1977-85 models. that information you have is probably accurate.

the sailcalc numbers don't specify year though. I am confused to say the least.
go to oday owners website and look at the oday 23 numbers and you will see what I mean
