Painting a Wing

Can anyone out there give advice about the best way to paint a wing keel? Is it even necessary? I've sanded to gel on the entire bottom with the exception of the bottom of the keel. Its a catalina 22 sitting on its trailer in my driveway where i'm doing the whole project.

Also, with regards to a new barrier coat... I think i'll need to do a little keel fairing before I paint (see attached picture - I do still have a little paint removal to go...), is it general practice to barrier coat the whole keel or just a little ways below the keel boot?

Fair the whole thing. barrier coat the whole thing and then bottom paint the whole thing.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

While you are filling an fairing, check the profile, the right NASA/NACA profile can make a big difference.

Ok... So given that the best way is to paint the whole thing. Anyone have any ideas as far as how to accomplish this? My guess is that the bottom of the keel will have to go without any new paint... Keep in mind its on the trailer.

You should be able to lift the boat up a bit to fair, barriercoat and paint the bottom of the keel. You'll probably want to block the keel, but you can move the blocks and do the bottom of the keel in sections.

Would a floor jack underneath the keel with a couple inches of 4x4 between have enough surface area to support the weight of the boat? Any particular spot on the keel to put such a sharp load? Thanks.

I don't know the boat well enough to say. Might want to ask catalina what they suggest.

Cas - You might be able to get away with renting some boat stands. Your boat is light enough that you can place 4 of them and they can jack and support your boat enough for getting under to get the spots with a roller.

Contact your friendly boatyard or boat transporter in the area. Most of them will sell them to you and give you 90% back on return. Which can be cheaper than renting them or buying them from a Marine Outlet store. This is what I have done for mine...and will save you a ton of effort from jerry rigging something....

i'd barrier coat and paint the whole thing. i'm just about finished on my c-30 with wing keel. i was thinking the same thing as i was barrier coating since the keel is lead but i figured i had the paint and i was under the boat anyway why not do the whole thing. i couldn't get under part of the center of the wing where the 6x6's were so i just left them with the old paint on. i figure 2 areas about 36 sq. inches on a lead keel isn't going to matter too much.
