Handheld GPS''s below deck

Hi,
im about to buy a handheld GPS(in particular im looking at a Garmin GPS76),my concern is the reception below deck,of a fibreglass yacht,

has anyone noticed any problems with your reception below decks?

some different models have the option of a remote antenna(the GPS76 does not),is this really needed?

the GPS76 antenna type is a "built-in quadrifilar" maybe this type doesnt require remote antennas below decks???

I have the Garmin Etrex. It gets better reception abovedeck but still receives belowdeck.

I have the GPS76. It does pretty well below deck. It''s quicker to find a signal on above, but it tracks pretty well down below.

I have a handheld, a Garmin 48, that I mounted below. I got a holder, an antenna and a power cable. It works great that way. I got a handheld because I use it in the field for my job. The reception below isn''t great.

I hav a Magellan 315 it works great below deck without an external antenna, mind you My nav station is reletivley close to the Companion way and the hatch is typically open.

I have used both a Garmin and Magellan bellow deck. Both had a portable antenna that you could mount near a hatch or window. I found both systems would loose signal quality from time to time. I finally went to a fixed mount GPS with external antena.

If you plan to hook up to a laptop, go with a fixed mount. If not, a handheld is just fine.
