Ed, I am aware of the process - but, according to the site, to order an update, it first has to be available for a given unit, and the site claims (or used to anyway) that none are available for mine. So I've got nothing to order on a card or in any other way.

I checked out today the touchscreen version of the comparative likes of the E-series from Raymarine. I enjoyed the touchscreen ability as the paging function of the Raymarine C and E series - just too many buttons to get where you want. Then I realized that I couldn't integrate my Raymarine Radar, digital HD depth etc...

There will be no good in this if indeed Garmin gets the bid ... the interfaces and overall business objective in terms of the customer set each company tries to get are vastly different. And that ultimately is the failure of the marine sector of electronics...sure you can integrate depth, speed, and wind sensors but the high ticket items if going HD or using Radar... never match and thus one is locked in... Kinda like the Mac versus PC...

I got that email from Garmin about the chart update quite awhile ago now, so I don't have the email to show you anymore. I went to the Garmin site after reading what you said, to see if I could bring up that update again, but I don't have my serial number with me at the moment to gain access (left the s# on the boat with the manual). I'll try and remember to get my s# tomorrow, and try the Garmin site again.

I do remember though, signing up with Garmin for email updates when they become available, but that was the only email I ever received from them in little more than a year.

That's another strange thing - I distinctly remember registering for support etc. on their site, but now it claims I don't have a login there (and I am certain that I did not forget what the login is either ). Who the heck knows what they do.

I will get my serial this weekend too and try again - see what it says. I wonder if we can find a specific chart feature that you know was updated and compare it on my plotter and yours, to see if charts are different?

I got my serial number off mt plotter, and went to Garmin to see if there was an update...and they said there wasn't.

I searched around the Garmin site looking the page for BlueChart g2 Garmin: BlueChart g2 , then followed the link at the bottom of the page. Garmin: BlueChart g2

I selected Zone 1 Garmin: Cartography - BlueChart g2 - Americas

Selected: US (Including Alaska & Hawaii) Garmin: Cartography - BlueChart g2 - US (Including Alaska & Hawaii)

Then selected the area I was interested in: West Coast (including Hawaii) ...you would probably be selecting somewhere else. I then had a choice between US Bathymetric or charts of the area I was interested in...I selected the charts.

The page that it takes you to, will have a list of BlueChart g2 by regions with brief discriptions and pricing. If you click on View Detail and scoll down, you will see the 'Chart Number' 'Name' 'Scale' 'Country of Origin' 'Edition: Month/Year' 'Correction: Month/Year'.

I could tell by the date when I purchased my plotter, and the dates on the charts, if any of the charts were newer versions than the ones I had.

Even though the Garmin site said there were no chart updates for me, I was able to determine from the list of charts that there were some newer charts I didn't have...but I didn't really want to pay the price for charts I wasn't going to use...at least for now.

Does this information help you?

Yep, this clarifies things quite a bit

I know that Garmin updates their paid-for charts consistently. I thought, when you mentioned that update for 3210 was available, that you are talking about the built-in chart update, that in theory exists and is sold for a "nominal" price. I understand that it is possible to buy more recent charts separately and use those, but that somewhat defeats the purpose of having a plotter with built-in charts for me

Curious, I checked my areas (east coast) and most charts are updated at best to beginning of 2007 (04-05 2007 or so). Presumably my GPS is much newer than that so, perhaps, it really doesn't have any updates. I wonder.

I was talking about updates for my preloaded Garmin plotter, but maybe the email I got wasn't just for my preloaded plotter...it might have been for all plotters, preloaded or not. I wish I still had that email to know for sure!

I kinda think the preloading charts thing, was a way for Garmin to stimulate sales. I mean, why buy a plotter with no charts, when you can have the same plotter with charts for the same price!...I'll take the last one!...and I did...lol

Well, it makes sense to me that you have the most recent charts available.

Yeh, as long as term "recent" is applied rather loosely. A 2 year old chart in many areas of ICW is pretty much worthless (other than for general reference). But it's "the most recent" available from Garmin.

It would be nice to have a chartplotter that takes NOAA charts. May be I should source that hardware platform after all.
