Transom Cover

I am wondering if anyone has advice on making a transom cover to protect my dark blue gelcoat from the sun. Over time I know the dark gelcoats turn chalky and many end up painting with awlgrip to keep the hull topsides looking good. I figure a cover over my stern only (which catches more direct light) is bound to make my blue transom look good much longer.

Have seen this done before - makes sense. We had a boat with a severly raked transom and within a couple of years of an awlgrip refit the transom was noticeably faded - and this in an area that was not renowned for sunshine! Our problem was that our area was notoriously windy and we couldn't really figure out a way to keep a cover in place without doing more potential damage than the sun did.

Elastic edges seem the way to go, but chafing/scratching the topsides may occur depending on the material chosen. Sunbrella would last but may be on the "scratchy" side, esp when new.

Using weights to hold things down may work too, but there you have the issue of "knocking" the hull when your retrieve or install the cover... hanging the weights below the surface will make things green and slimy...

Probably a softer material with a gathered hem that 'grabbed onto' the counter, and the upper ends tied to a toerail/cleat would be the trick.

You have a Sabre and you are going to cover it up with Canvas? No way. You don't want to cover up a beautiful boat.

That's like dating Giselle and putting a bag over her head all the time so she doesn't get sunspots.

That's a great response, Pamlicotraveler. But like Giselle, I want to keep my good-looking girl covered up until I'm with her. Gotta figure it's protection on my investment - everyone knows what damage the sun does whether to exposed skin or a dark gelcoat!

Faster, appreciate the reply. I am finding some folks who have had transom covers made so I'm pooling their advice.

The cover can be lined with another material such as fleece for the chaffing.
Fleece is polyester which which is hydrophobic and is a lot softer than sunbrella.
