Bilge, before/after

Pulled the engine, thought I would paint the bilge. Here are the photos:

Bilge before (oooohh, Scary!)

... and, after. Nice. :-)

I considered BilgeKote, but ended up using plain old polyeurethane paint designed for porches and floors. I was absolutely obsessive with the prep work though-- every surface sanded and wiped down with spirits. My trick for forming a good mechanical bond was to apply the first coat with 50% thinner, then three more coats full-strength. The hull really soaked it up. We'll see if it lasts.

He's obviously cheated and taken photos from two different boats...

Nice job... but I would have recommended using Interprotect 2000E barrier coating as a "paint" for the bilge instead of a polyurethane.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

JR - I just noticed you're in Mandeville. I have the J/30 Rambunctious in Prieto Marina (across the park area, close to Northshore Marine). If you see me, please come introduce yourself. Also, if you would like to do some racing, let me know.

Thanks dog. Are you referring to the lowest part of the bilge, where it would be wet often? Or, does you recommendation apply to anything below the cabin sole? I'm just asking because I'm curious... it's too late to change it now!

I used this paint a few years ago in some other spots below the cabin sole, and it is holding up rock solid.

Wow, Jason, small world! I'm in Prieto Marina also. I'm the first boat on the left as you walk down the covered area. Blue hull, tan canvas, "Seaquel". Two boats down from Dennis Chevront (Touche). I've raced with him a time or two. You must be over near the slip where that small boat impaled itself on a piling during Katrina.
