Refurbishing a dingy.
I picked up a 7' rowing dink this weekend for nothing. Ive already cleaned it up and sanded the whole thing down to 80grit. Ive got a bunch of bare spots on the hull now from where i had to grind oyster shells off it. Im at the point where im wondering if i should coat the bottom with epoxy or just paint it. Ive got to do a few patches on it, so i will be breaking out the epoxy anyway.

Fair the bottom with epoxy, and then barrier coat it... to protect the epoxy from UV.

Well im going to be painting the whole thing, including the bottom. The bottom will get antifouling paint. What do i need to barrier coat it? Im trying to get by with stuff ive already got.

Sand the bottom well to make a "tooth" for the epoxy. 3 or 4 coats of epoxy should do it. If you use mas epoxy just paint when dry. If you use west or others be sure to wash the blush off before painting.

wash the blush off using water and a scotchbrite pad. Soap isn't necessary. Rinsing well is.

Im glad i know that now, i cant get bottom paint to stick to a repair i made on my skiff for anything. Now i know why.

The amine blush is basically a waxy coating... and very little will stick well to it...even epoxy has problems. So if you let the epoxy go past the tack stage... you'll have to let it cure and scrub the blush off..
