GPS V and BlueChart

I picked up an older Garmin GPS V at a pawn shop. I really just needed speed info because my knot paddle is fouled and this was cheap.

But now that I have it, i'm confused about what all it is capable of.

If I get a copy of BluChart does it get loaded in the unit or will it work with a laptop like a chart plotter ?

For the sailing I do I'd never spend the money on such luxury but if I can cobble it together real cheap in might be nice.

The unit as it is now just tells you where you are (lat/long and basic land mass shape) There is no ATON info.

thanks

Hertford-

If you connect it to a laptop, assuming the GPSV has NMEA 0183 outputs, it will allow you to use the laptop as a chartplotter, but you will need software and charts for the laptop. SeaClear II and NOAA charts will work if you're in the US and are free for download.

Don't believe it is compatible with the latest versions of the BlueChart software though.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

According to this, the GPS V can handle BlueCharts, but maybe with limitations

It can handle the Bluechart software, with serious limitations, but is not compatible AFAIK with the Bluechart G2 series.

BTW, if you have the BlueChart software loaded on the computer, it will allow the computer to act as a Chartplotter IIRC. However, using the NOAA charts and SeaClear II is a lot cheaper and the charts are probably more up to date.

If you don't have an RS-232 serial port on your computer, you will need a USB-to-Serial port converter cable.
