Hand-held depth sounders

My wife and I have been cruising the Sea of Cortes and western Mexico for the last three winters. Charts are often inadequate, so we have thought of checking anchorages with a hand-held depth sounder from our dinghy before we take the big boat in. I would like to hear from folks who have experience with theses things; good or bad. Please include brand names.
