Cracks in the gelcoat should not indicate cause for concern that water will get into a core, unless the figerglass substrate is also cracked - which would be unlikely - but if it were, the substrate should be gound out and repaired with new glass.
More likely any wetness in core would be traced to failing bedding.
If you have typical spyder-cracking in gelcoat, repairing it with gelcoat is the best way to go, from any perspective. Once agin, try to figure out how to correct the source of the spydering.
