I just bought a dingy finally

I got the Sea Eagle 8.10YT with the Max pump. Now we can actually anchor out and be able to go ashore instead of having to dock all of the time. I'll let ya'll know what I think of it after I use it a bit.

Dumb question, but can you normally anchor out anywhere outside the channel or does each harbor or marina have different rules for that? Newbie not sure of the eitiquette for that.

Tribe,

One of the aspects that makes for a desirable cruising area is the ability to anchor out, rather than always going in to docks/marinas. A lot of us avoid docks as much as possible, preferring the peace and quiet (hopefully) of our own little piece of "waterfront" out in the anchorage. Most of the North American cruisng grounds you read about (Chesapeake, Pacific Northwest, Long Island, New England, etc, etc, etc) are blessed with abundant anchorages.

So the short answer is "Yes", assuming there is some protection from the wind and waves, and good holding for the anchor.

Most places outside the channel are available for anchorage around here. Some marinas have specific areas, like Friday Harbor.

Thanks for the responses - that's what I was hoping to hear. Some marinas seem to have way too much activity for me. Sometimes I'd prefer the peace of mind of having a nice spot off by myself, even if I have to row or kayak in for any reason.

Tribe...on all nautical charts you can find both coast guard approved special anchorages and prohibited areas IF they exist. Otherwise...you can drop the hook anywhere that appeals to you that is outside of a channel. It always is best to check the chart first for any underground cables or obstructions which your anchor might hook.
When at anchor you MUST display and all around white light at night UNLESS you are in one of the aforementioned Coast Guard charted and approved anchorages.

Also...a single round black ball (day shape) is required when you drop the hook during the day but it is almost NEVER actually done. Someone anal would correct me if I didn't mention it though!

I'm almost afraid to admit it, but we use the day shape frequently, especially if there is a lot of motorboat traffic in the vicinity. But mind you, I'm not correcting anyone...
