Buying an ancor from a neighbor...

My neighbor is giving up his genuine 66lb bruce for a shiny new Manson. I'm a little jealous of his shiny new toy because I'm a broke student and my toys are not shiny anymore.

I asked what he is doing with his anchor and he said he'd probably drag it down to the consignment store down the road and get rid of it. I'm considering buying it from him because currently I have a 44lb Bruce on my boat which I feel is a little small.

I plan to use a Spade (or another new generation anchor) as my primary for our long trip in a few years so this anchor would only be used as a primary for a couple seasons and then would live in the bilge forever in case the primary (spade) was lost one day.

It is in generally good shape (not bent) but most of the galvanizing is gone from it. I'm not sure I need an upgrade for this purpose and if I buy it I may have to galvanize it, but I'm tempted because of the deeper sleep factor.


It's hard to say what it's worth as Bruce no longer makes anchors. Does anyone have an idea of what I should offer him for the anchor? I'm a poor student and don't want to put too much into this prospective purchase but on the other hand I REALLY wouldn't want to low ball my neighbor and possibly offend him.

Why don't you find out roughly how much it will cost to re-galvanize it... and then ask him what he wants for it...and figure out if the two numbers added are worth paying for it. When you ask him about how much he wants for it, tell him how much re-galvanizing it is going to cost.

all i can add is that we slept quite well with the 66 lb Bruce during some rolling swells. just ask him how much he'll take for it then tell him you want it but all you can afford is $$$??? good luck
