Love the state .. dont get the name!
IIRC, the Colorado series is equally at home on the trail (topo mapping, etc.) as it is on the water, thus the name "Colorado". Maybe the marketing department is trying to expand beyond just marine GPS dominance.

West is just like most retailers. Thye have some good deals, some great deals and some bad deals.
I needed a can of air for a horn. West had them for something like $17. Went next door and bought it for about $5!
You gotta shop around, shop shop, shop around.

And price matching doesn't always work. They add in the shipping cost and the tax vs defender.

But I do shop West, I have found some very good deals and I've found stuff there I NEEDED!

Defender has a great deal on Mas epoxy.

Agree. And don't forget to always consider whether some other type of retailer might also be selling what you need. For maintenance work, especially, much of the materials are generic enough to also be found at the hardware store. Thus, you can probably buy the exact same or functionally/qualitatively identical product elsewhere for a fraction of the price.

Case in point, I needed a new voltmeter a couple of weeks ago (which will probably be a post unto itself here soon). Home Depot had one for $12. A comparable one at WM was $32.

Unless it's truly marine-specific, you can probably find it more cheaply elsewhere. I suspect they count on the fact that you'll overpay for non-marine specific items in order to only have to make one stop, and in my case they're often right--I may be an anomaly, but my time is generally at a much greater premium than saving a few dollars per transaction.

The Internet vs. WestMarine price debate is the same thing, only with the question being, "What premium will you pay for immediate fulfillment/gratification and the ability to handle the item beforehand?" Maybe if I lived in a place where the season was nearly year-around, I'd have more patience for downtime, but up here on the Great Lakes, we don't have enough of a season to piss it away waiting on parts to ship to save a few bucks.

So I tend to shop on-line when buying materials for a planned project, but head to WM for getting parts for repairs which are standing between me and getting on the water. Incremental price is almost immaterial, especially given that I'd probably burn all the savings that I got by ordering from Defender on priority shipping anyway.

With the price of gas, the driving to west vs. shipping from some place else, is getting closer and closer in cost.

Spending a few bucks on a quality meter ie Fluke. Is well worth it. It will last a long long time and a lot more dependable than a cheapy

True, but only worth it if you don't seem to lose it or loan it to someone who then loses it for you at least once per year

Smile

Thats why I have three. One keep at the parents, one in the car and one on the boat. I'll lend out the one I keep in car but the one in the boat was really pricey so it stays there or I go with it. I do understand what your saying though. I need a locater for my car keys. I misplace them all the time.

Mas is a 2:1 product. I am OK with that for most applications and to be honest, it is a whole lot easier to work with if you don't want to spring for the pump system, but it isn't a fair apples to apples comparison to comapare it to higher ratio products like the West (which Defender does have for less than West, but I guess West would match). That's why I mentioned the 4:1 stuff as an example. The lower the ratio, the more "stuff that isn't epoxy solids" that ends up on your hull. So the Mas is an example of what I was talking about - a different tier of product. I think they are in the middle between West and the cheap stuff. I wish West carried more of such products rather than forcing me to either get high end or go elsewhere.

Andy,

I am not so sure I agree with you about Mas epoxy being inferior to West Systems. Having worked with both, I much prefer Mas. If you have facts rather then opinion, I love to see it.
